Background

BrisDoc Healthcare Services are a major NHS service provider, delivering urgent and routine Primary Care, across the whole of Bristol, North Somerset & South Gloucestershire. They provide services 24hrs a day, 365 days a year and are responsible for the healthcare of nearly 1 Million patients in the South West. BrisDoc have a workforce of over 500 people including GPs, Nurses, Paramedics, Pharmacists & Operational staff all working towards the same goal of delivering excellent patient care by people who care.

Challenge

In an ever changing threat landscape, especially in the healthcare industry, where uptime of systems is critical, it’s important that BrisDoc are at the forefront of security and performance. BrisDoc needed a solution that was able to meet these criteria while still coming within their budget. Adding the complication of 24 hour availability to the mix meant that highly available systems also needed to be considered.

Solution

BrisDoc purchased Sophos Antivirus products from Bristol IT Company which are centrally managed in Sophos Central Advanced an award winning product, that gives nearly live reporting on the status of all machines. Combining advanced Sophos Antivirus solutions with Sophos XG Firewalls allowed them to deploy Web Filtering and Secure Remote Working via secure VPN using two factor authentication. Using Sophos’ centralised security, they were able to have workstations send their ‘heartbeat’ to the Firewall which allows the Firewall to monitor and deny access to other systems if their security is compromised. BrisDoc’s XG Firewall is also configured in a high availability configuration – this, combined with dual leased lines allows for 100% uptime, even when applying security patches.

Results

BrisDoc have been able to achieve Cyber Essentials compliance and received their certification in March this year. They are now at the forefront of protecting their computers and users against cyber security threats, allowing them to spend more time caring for people – what they do best!
